Apple is reportedly preparing to bring Apple Intelligence to China with the upcoming iOS 27.3 update, marking a significant step toward expanding its artificial intelligence services into one of its most important markets. According to a report by Bloomberg, the update is expected to arrive in December, although Chinese users will receive a more limited selection of AI features than users in the United States.

Apple first introduced Apple Intelligence in 2024 alongside iOS 18\. However, regulatory challenges have delayed its availability in both China and the European Union (EU). The planned Chinese rollout could help Apple address one of these major regional restrictions, but several limitations will remain in place.

## Apple Partners With Alibaba to Bring AI Features to China

Unlike its approach in Western markets, where Apple relies on Google's Gemini models for certain AI capabilities, the company has reportedly partnered with Alibaba to introduce Apple Intelligence in China.

The collaboration will involve Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang AI models, with each serving a different purpose within Apple's AI ecosystem.

Qwen is a general-purpose AI model expected to power most of the Apple Intelligence features available to Chinese users. However, the initial release reportedly will not include AI-powered Siri. Certain text-generation capabilities will also be restricted within specific applications because of local regulatory requirements.

These restrictions are not primarily related to technical limitations. Instead, China's regulatory environment is expected to determine which AI features Apple can offer and how they can be implemented.

## Image Generation Features Will Also Face Restrictions

Alibaba's Tongyi Wanxiang model specializes in generating images and videos and is expected to support image-related tasks within Apple Intelligence.

Despite this integration, Apple reportedly will not be able to introduce its Image Playground feature in China because of local regulations. As a result, users may have access to some image-editing capabilities without receiving the complete collection of image-generation tools available in other markets.

Overall, the Chinese version of Apple Intelligence is expected to offer fewer capabilities than its US counterpart, highlighting how Apple's AI strategy must adapt to different regulatory environments.

## AI-Powered Siri Remains Unavailable in China and the EU

China is not the only market where Apple has limited the availability of its advanced AI features. The European Union also faces restrictions, particularly concerning the rollout of the upgraded Siri experience across Apple's mobile devices.

According to Apple's September update regarding Siri AI and Apple Intelligence availability, Mac computers and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when their devices are configured to a supported language. However, the feature will initially remain unavailable on iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches in the region.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has indicated that users in both China and the EU should not expect the arrival of AI-powered Siri in the near future.

## What to Expect From Apple Intelligence in China

The expected iOS 27.3 release could bring Apple Intelligence to Chinese users for the first time, but the rollout will reportedly be limited by local laws and Apple's regional partnerships.

Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models are expected to provide the foundation for several AI functions, while advanced Siri capabilities, certain text-generation tools, and Image Playground will remain unavailable initially.

Although the planned December update would represent an important milestone for Apple, the differences between regional versions of Apple Intelligence demonstrate that access to Apple's AI ecosystem will continue to depend on a user's location and the regulations governing that market.
